Hey epyic crew

After a glimpse of what spring will bring over the weekend, we’re back to winter mode this week. Our good friend and tech co-founder, Steve, decided the 20°+ sunny days in Brisbane meant he didn’t get a winter this year and decided to visit us this week^. Boy, are we showing him a Melbourne winter.

It’s a great reminder though to not let winter slip by. Regardless of how you prefer to enjoy winter - whether it’s heading up to Mt Buller at 5am for a day trip, climbing Mount Macedon for the panoramic views, or a chill waterfront market stroll and a long lunch somewhere warm. Get outside and make the most of it.

See you out there
Stella & Chris

^ p.s Don’t worry, we’ve made sure our Queenslander has his puffer jacket before he hits the border!

ADVENTURES THIS WEEK 🔥

🛷 Mt Buller Magic School Bus Snow Day | 7 Days of Fun

Some snow days you drift into. This one starts at 5:15am outside the NGV, loading into a 14-seater with 12 other keen humans while Melbourne sleeps. Coffee stop at Yea, snow chains and snowshoes at Mansfield, then five big hours on Mt Buller: a village loop, a trek up the summit if conditions play nice, tobogganing, and a snow stand-off nobody escapes dry.

You'll catch an alpine sunset on the way down and roll back into town happily spent, winter had.

📅 Sun 9 Aug, 5:15am to 9:30pm 📍 Departs NGV

⛰️ Hiking Mount Macedon | Pride Adventures Victoria

Mount Macedon rewards the climbers. A steady forest ascent opens out at the Memorial Cross, where the trees thin and the views run wide, and that's just the first summit. This 19km loop keeps giving: the Western Face through messmate forest, an optional scramble up Camels Hump, Sanatorium Lake with its robins, wallabies and herons, and a final rocky descent off Mount Towrong with the west of Victoria spread out below.

With 724m of climbing at a steady pace, it's a proper day out for hikers ready to push past the easy stuff. You’ll feel your legs the next day but the memories will be worth it.

📅 Sat 8 Aug, 8:30am to 2:15pm 📍 Mt Macedon Trading Post (Carpool options available)
🎟️ Free to join but please RSVP

Grampians Peaks Walking Co

If last week's Absolute Outdoors spotlight got you curious about Gariwerd, meet their sister company. Grampians Peaks Walking Co are the local specialists of the Grampians Peaks Trail: 160km of rugged sandstone peaks, sheer cliffs and waterfalls, walked alongside award-winning local guides who know its stories.

Their multi-day walks run the full comfort spectrum, from tent-based expeditions to comfortable on-trail huts to pack-free walks with a local wine waiting at your luxury lodge at the end of the day. And if you'd rather tackle the trail on your own, their shuttle, food drops and gear hire take the hassle out so you can focus on the trek.

Immerse in the beauty of the incredible landscape and rich culture that is Gariwerd.

Living Culture

Lionel Lauch, a Gunditjmara Kirrae Wurrung-Bundjalung man, founded Living Culture to keep Aboriginal culture alive by sharing it. From his home on the Mornington Peninsula, Lionel and his team lead guided walks, Yidaki (didgeridoo) led meditations and cultural programs that offer a rare depth of insight into the heritage of the Bunurong / Boon Wurrung peoples and this land.

Their guided walks will start again soon, and they're worth the wait: unhurried, generous, and grounded in tens of thousands of years of knowledge. Experience Mornington Peninsula more profoundly than you ever have.

Can’t wait? They’re running their men’s retreat, Two Ears One Mouth, a four-day experience on the Peninsula (27-30 Nov) with Lionel, Si Mullumby, one of Australia's most respected didgeridoo players, and master instrument maker Jon Worsley. Built around breath, sound and connection to Country.

MORE ADVENTURES THIS WEEK 🔥

⛷️ Intro to Cross Country Skiing | Traverse Hotham

No lifts, no crowds, no lift pass. Cross country skiing is winter at your own pace, powered entirely by you, and it opens up parts of the mountain the lift queues never get to see. The gear looks familiar but the mechanics are their own thing, so this 90-minute group session covers the technique you need to stay upright (always helpful), glide efficiently and go free-range across the snow.

If you've never slid on snow in any form, try an Absolute Beginner lesson with Glen first. Everyone else: this is your key to the quiet side of winter.

📅 Sat 8 Aug, 9 to 10:30am 📍 Hotham

🥾 Jumping Creek Day Hike | Take Shape Adventures

You don't need a road trip for a proper day out on the trail. Just past Warrandyte, the Jumping Creek track packs plenty into 17km: pockets of parkland, riverbank walking, a few honest hills, and trails that swing between single track and wide open. Lunch and snacks are provided, the TSA guides keep the pace social, and nobody gets left at the back, because that's where the guides are.

Jumping at the creek is mandatory, of course.

Want something shorter / on Sunday? Their Dusty Miller Loop winds through towering gums and fern-lined gullies in Kinglake West and you’ll be back in time for lunch.

📅 Sat 8 Aug, 9am to 3pm 📍 Warrandyte

🌳 Forest Therapy at Edgars Creek | Forest Therapy Victoria

Hidden in the northern suburbs, Edgars Lake Parkland takes you away from the week that was. Early mornings bring a mist rising off the water, birds calling across the surface, and the quiet sense that the world is just waking. This three-hour guided forest therapy experience follows the winding paths at the water's edge through creative and sensory activities designed to slow you down, deepen your breath and settle the noise.

Ducks glide without urgency. You're invited to do the same.

📅 Sun 9 Aug, 9:30am to 12:30pm 📍 Coburg North
